Do you ever hear the question "what’s for dinner?" without having an immediate answer? You’re not alone. 2 out of every 3 Americans don’t think about what’s for dinner until after 4 PM. At that point it usually involves a mad dash to the grocery store – often with kids in tow – before rushing home to pick out a recipe, and then chop, dice and cook ingredients and eventually clean up the mess in the kitchen. This process often takes more than 1½ hours to prepare one meal. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a better solution? With our organic dinner kits you can have a delicious, healthy organic meal ready in about 15 minutes without any of these hassles.

Food

What food choices do you offer?

Each month we offer a new selection of 12 or more organic dishes to choose from, including 4–7 vegetarian meals. Almost all of our meals can be modified (at no additional charge) to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions (i.e. no gluten, no dairy, etc.).

We rarely repeat any item more than twice per year unless there is particularly high customer demand.

We offer fun and hassle-free culinary adventures. The dishes each month incorporate a range of cuisines and ingredients. We also combine a variety of cooking styles utilizing your oven, range, grill (you will still be able to pan-fry the recipe if you don’t have a grill), stock pot and crock-pot (slow cooker). At The Organic Dish you can try dishes based on cultures from around the world and from right here in Colorado without having to buy several different spices or ingredients just to make one dish.

How many people will each organic dinner serve?

Each regular organic dinner serves 2 to 3 people (depending on individual appetites), and each large organic dinner serves 5 to 6 people.

Do you have meals for one person?

No. But the majority of our meals can easily be refrigerated (or frozen) after cooking and re-heated in a microwave – that way our regular meals (2-3 servings) can take care of dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow for one person.

Do you offer vegetarian meals?

Yes. We offer at least 4–7 vegetarian meals each month.

Do you offer vegan meals?

Yes. Only a few of our organic vegetarian meals contain dairy products (we usually prefer olive oil and soy-based products), and the ones that do can often be made without to accommodate a vegan diet.

Do you use whole grains?

Yes. All of our rice is whole grain, and we have whole grain pasta, couscous, and bread available on request.

Is everything organic?

No. Our meals are about 95% organic. There are some ingredients that are either not available organically (e.g. salt, water), or we cannot find a cost effective and reliable source (e.g. mirin – Japanese cooking wine). If one of our dinners contains non-organic ingredients, they will be clearly indicated in orange on our monthly menu.

In an effort to keep our prices reasonable, we have decided to use all natural (i.e. non-organic) beef, poultry and pork. That means the animals are raised without antibiotics and growth hormones and they are never fed animal byproducts. In addition, our beef is grass fed for maximum flavor. We buy our beef from Coleman™ Natural Beef, our poultry from Wisdom’s Natural Poultry and our pork from Long Family Farms in Eaton, Colorado.

Do you use wild or farm- or ocean-raised fish in your recipes?

We use wild fish in all of our recipes. While this adds some cost to our fish dishes, we believe it is the right choice to make for our health and the health of our environment.

Logically you might think farm- or ocean-raised fish would be better for our environment and better for us. But we have learned that farm raised means the fish don’t get lots of swimming room, are prone to disease (and therefore fed antibiotics) and can get out and infect the fish in the wild. They are also high in mercury.

Salmon, for example, is an incredibly healthful fish full of omega 3s. Since Farmed Salmon are fed pellets instead of what they eat in the wild three elements are affected.

  1. The food they normally eat in the wild converts into powerful omega 3s for us; the farm raised salmon doesn’t have the same nutritional value.
  2. The food they eat naturally helps them turn that beautiful pink color to which we are accustomed; the farm raised are therefore fed colorings to make them more palatable to our eye.
  3. The food they eat affects how they taste and there is truly no comparison in flavor or texture.

Do you provide side dishes?

Yes. While some of our organic meals are one-pot meals and do not need side dishes (stews, soups, etc.), other meals are not complete unless they are paired with just the right side dish. For example, most of our organic dinners include a starch (rice, potato, pasta, etc.) and a seasonal vegetable, such as carrots, kale, spinach or broccoli.

How long can the organic meals stay frozen?

Our organic meals can be kept frozen for 3-5 months.

Can I defrost my meals in the microwave (or what is the best way to defrost my meals)?

No. Do not microwave the Ziploc™ bags or corn containers. We recommend letting your meals defrost in your refrigerator for 24–48 hours. If you want to speed up the process, we suggest using a cold water bath – just put the Ziploc™ bags in a large bowl in your sink with cold water circulating/flowing around them.

Do you provide nutritional information for your dishes?

Yes. The nutritional information is based on individual servings (unless otherwise stated). For example, if one meal was divided into 6 equal portions, the nutritional information would be correct for one portion.

To view this information, go to our monthly menu and click on the show nutritional information link.

Can you accommodate a low carbohydrate diet?

We do not specifically offer "low-carb" meals. But if you are trying to decrease your carbohydrate intake, you can review the nutritional information on our monthly menu and choose meals which are either lower in carbohydrates or can be easily modified by making small substitutions or by omitting some of the higher carbohydrate ingredients.

Do you offer low fat meals?

We do not specifically offer "low-fat" meals. But we use low and non-fat ingredients where we can without compromising taste. But if you are watching your fat intake, you can review the nutritional information on our monthly menu, and choose meals which are either lower in fat or can be easily modified by making small substitutions or by omitting some of the fattier ingredients.

I am allergic to gluten – will your organic meals work for me?

Many of our organic meals are naturally gluten free, and some others can be made gluten free with simple substitutions (rice pasta for regular pasta, rice for couscous). Please take a look at the nutritional information and ingredients of the menu items on of our current monthly menu and don’t hesitate to contact us to review recipe ingredients over the phone (1-800-408-5905) or email.

We can make many substitutions when you place a pick-up order or come to our kitchen for grab n’ go meals.

What if I have severe food allergies?

Your (and your family’s) health and safety are of the utmost importance to us. We work hard to address the concerns of customers with food allergies and other health issues. We encourage you to take a look at the nutritional information and ingredients of the menu items on of our current monthly menu. In addition, we can also review recipe ingredients over the phone (1-800-408-5905) or online. However, given the close proximity of our work stations, it is impossible for us to guarantee that cross-contamination of products will not occur. Therefore we must ultimately leave it up to you to determine whether our organic meals and the environment in which they are prepared will work for you.

Do you use ingredients with preservatives or MSG?

No. We do not use preservatives in our organic dinners, but there may be a small number of prepared ingredients (i.e., condiments, sauces, soup stock, etc.) used in our recipes which may contain preservatives or monosodium glutamate (MSG).

If you have concerns regarding preservatives or MSG please contact us online or call us at 1-800-408-5905 prior to ordering, and we will review each meal’s ingredients with you. This will give you the information you need to decide which meals you should select.
