We get what we promote
As is often the case, Seth Godin recently had an interesting post on his blog that caught my attention. In his post “Don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone” Seth points out that we – as consumers – have unprecedented power, but that with power comes responsibility. He reminds us that we need to support the things, brands, places, or establishments we enjoy, lest they go out of business because too many people greedily kept the secret to themselves.
I was reminded of the truth in Seth’s post today at Whole Foods. I was looking for a package of Emmi’s cheese fondue. Beckie and I love this product. It tastes great, is easy to prepare, it has a limited number of pronounceable ingredients, and the aluminum pouch packaging can be recycled. What’s not to love? After much looking I was told – to my great disappointment – that Whole Foods would not be carrying this product anymore. I wish I had told more people (one person!) about this tasty dinner treat before it disappeared.
However, I found that Longmont’s Cheese Importers still carries the Emmi cheese fondue, and I promptly bought several packages and told the cashier how much we enjoy it.
What products/services/establishments do you love that you’re not talking enough about?
UPDATE: I just found out about Keane, a guy at a marketing agency trying to save a new green cleaning product. The product is called “Essentials,” it’s made by Arm & Hammer and it’s about to get axed due to a lack of consumer interest. While I haven’t tried the product, I’m going to assume it works, and that the biodegradability claims are true instead of greenwash. But products making such claims are a dime a dozen these days. However, what I immediatly liked about this product is that it emulates the Tide refill model and even takes it a step further. Bottles are shipped empty, resulting in a huge fosil fuel savings, and the product comes in a concentrated “cartridge” that consumers use to fill (and refill) the bottle. Keane posted a very simple, convincing video at http://saveessentials.com/ – check it out.

Here’s some products that I love and would like to pass the word on!
Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner – ~$32 – http://www.drhauschka.com – I really dig this toner. It lasts forever and I use it in place of lotion at night and haven’t used facial lotion for ~ 3 years at night. Dr. Hauschka products are paraben free and don’t smell (aka stink!). I’m in and out of the bathroom so quick at night. I also appreciate that they don’t buy into the theory that there are 11 steps to healthy skin care… It’s a German product and not certified organic, but most of their ingredients are grown “bio-dynamically” on site and without herbicides/pesticides.
Whole Foods Pink Grapefruit Body Scrub – ~$20 for 16 ounces- I don’t use body lotion anymore either. This is a certified organic (salt can’t be certified organic) bodyscrub and doesn’t contain parabens or phthalate(endocrine disrupters). It doesn’t smell strong (just lightly of grapefruit) and leaves your skin soft.
Goddess Garden Ginger Apricot Oil Body Scrub (http://www.goddessgarden.com) – ~$13 for 12 ounces – This is another great body scrub that uses organic ingredients. I recently met the owners and this is a special holiday product not listed on their website. This has more salt/sugar and is less oil based than the WF Body Scrub and seems like more of a treat. I really don’t dig smelly stuff, but this has a really wonderful light ginger – almond smell.

Good post – it’s so true – I’m off to buy some of the Essentials cleaners right after work so I can test them out cleaning the house tonight. It’s a shame to see something good (or great) disappear because the few who knew about it and loved it didn’t tell everyone they knew about it.

Hey! Thanks for the post! Yes, it is to bad about Essentials… but hope is not yet lost! We have about a week and a half left before the doors shut forever. Tell your friends, send them to saveessentials.com, tell them to get out there and buy a starter kit. Thanks again for helping out the cause!
