Here’s English Retreads story:  English Retreads owner and designer Heather English got the idea for English Retreads when she was floating down Boulder Creek on an inner tube.  “I needed a new handbag and wanted something that was fashionable and invincible, but not made from leather.”  With a rubber inner tube that was collecting dust, some scissors, glue, and rivets, Heather created her dream bag, and English Retreads hit the road in 2001.

I met Heather ~ 6 months ago through a common adviser at The Boulder Innovation Center.  I had seen her handbags, wallets, and belts before, but now I’m seeing them all over the place.  They sell everything from purses, to messenger bags (men and womens), clutches, dog collars, and belts made from recycled seatbelts.  I’m not a huge “purse person” but the mini-luxe is perfect for my wallet, lipstick, phone, and sunglasses.

Some other very cool facts about English Retreads:

  • It is woman and locally owned and operated in Boulder, Colorado.
  • Products are made from vintage (post-consumer) rubber from reclaimed truck inner tubes.
  • Products are lined with PET fabric (post industry fiber) made from 100% post-consumer plastic.
  • Each product is one-of-a-kind.
  • They offset 100% of their carbon emissions (including order shipments, employee commutes, and all operations) working with Native Energy.
  • They are a member of Green America (formerly Co-op America)

Their stuff is designed and made to last and never goes out of style or season.  Truck stops in the Boulder area supply the used inner tubes—each of which probably has more than 60,000 miles on it before it gets reinvented. “Just think of all the places these tubes have been,” says Heather. “Now it’s your turn to add to their miles and adventures.”  How cool is that.  Shop online, become a fan on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, or buy at Boulder Arts and Crafts Gallery or at Common Threads in Boulder!
