Let Boulder County Commissioners know you oppose GMO’s on Open Space

“Dear Naturally Boulder Supporters,

If you didn’t attend last Thursday’s GMO Hearing – or had to leave before your number was called due to the 9 ½ hours of testimony – it is not too late to have your voice heard.

The County Commissioners are accepting letters until 5 p.m. today, Monday, Dec. 12th.

You are part of the local Natural and Organic foods industry, and we need to let the County Commissioners know we oppose GMOs on County Open Space. If Boulder allows this to happen, we believe it will be detrimental to the “Boulder brand” and to our industry.

Why do we care at The Organic Dish?

GMO can not exist with non GMO and will destroy seed supply as we know it and the farmers that support and grow healthy organic food.

Disillusioned with traditional farming philosophies, a new generation of farmer’s wary of pushing forward are stepping back. Isolde Raferty explores the emerging Food Culture and the flawed establishment they are leaving behindin her NY Times article.

“Many shun industrial, mechanized farming and list punk rock, Karl Marx and the food journalist Michael Pollan as their influences. They are succeeding because of farmer-foodie culture, which demands grass-fed and pasture-raised meats.”

Although farmers over 55 own more than half of the country’s farmland, younger farmers and consumers alike are seeking smaller, more accountable food practices. Many of the new methods are untested and original.

“Finding mentors has been difficult. There is a knowledge gap that has been referred to as “the lost generation” — people their parents’ age may farm but do not know how to grow food.”

There is a lot of risk. The reality of living off the land has reintroduced the antiquated ideas of risk, consequences, and hunger to modern professionals. Not every operation will survive.

But more and more people are choosing to buy from small farms or grow food themselves. It is the movement as a whole that is gaining ground. Slowly but surely.
